Lord, Let Us Know Your Word

Our Sunday School lesson one morning was on King Josiah. The Bible says he was 8 when he became king and he did what was right in the sight of the Lord. If you read through 1-2 Kings most of the kings did not follow Gods ways so it's pretty amazing that at age 8, his spiritual compass was already pointed in the right direction.
Read a little further and it says in the 18th year of his reign (that would make him 26) he ordered repair work to be done on the temple of the Lord.... While cleaning and patching up everything they found The Book of the Law. It had been lost for several years. When King Josiah heard what The Book of Law said, he was really upset.
You see Josiah had thought he was living a godly life and pointing his people back to God, but in reality he didn't know Gods Word for himself. His leadership, while done with good intentions, wasn't complete because he did not know what the Word actually said. If you continue reading, it's says he went and did a purge of Gods temple and had the idols of Baal, Asherah and the Assyrian Gods removed and destroyed from the temple, immediately after hearing the reading of The Book of the Law.
That tells me that even though Josiah wanted to follow and give honor to God, he didn't realize that the people's lifestyle of worshipping pagan idols was wrong. He did not know Gods Word fully and the idols represented sin. Basically Josiah was letting Gods people participate in sin because he did not know any better. It seemed to be a normal part of their lifestyle.
Luckily for us, we have Gods Word. In my house alone there is at least 12+ bibles that I have access to on a daily basis. This doesn't include all the Bible Apps that are available. We can know and search out the truth for ourselves and we really MUST read Gods Word for ourselves, or if we're not careful we may end up like King Josiah, with good intentions, but not really knowing what Gods Word says. The scary thing is we may end up with sin in our lives too, which takes us away from God and what He has for us to do.
We have access to His Word, let's make it a point to read it and let it get down inside of us. The Bible says I have hidden your Word in my heart that I might not SIN against you. Psalm 119:11.
Something to think about....
